Outside Spring Caliper 0 - 190mm Range
SERIES 984

An Outside Spring Caliper is a mechanical measuring tool used to measure the external dimensions of an object, such as the outside diameter or thickness of a part. It is commonly used in metalworking, woodworking, and other crafts to take accurate measurements and transfer dimensions between tools or workpieces. The spring mechanism provides tension, allowing the user to finely adjust the legs of the caliper for precise measurements.

Applications

Metalworking and Machining:
- Checking Diameters: Commonly used to check the outside diameter of cylindrical objects like pipes, rods, or turned components on a lathe.
- Machining Tolerances: Helps machinists maintain tight tolerances during the machining process by taking quick comparative measurements.
Woodworking:
- Measuring Thickness: In woodworking, it is used to measure the thickness of wooden parts or ensure consistency when shaping round or curved surfaces.
- Turning Operations: Frequently used during woodturning operations to measure the diameter of turned pieces on a lathe.
Craftsmanship:
- Handcrafted Items: Used by artisans and craftspeople to measure and transfer dimensions when creating custom pieces or duplicating parts.
Inspection and Quality Control:
- Comparative Measurement: Used in quality control to compare the size of a finished workpiece to a standard or template.

How to Use an Outside Spring Caliper:

Adjust the Legs: Place the caliper's legs around the outside of the object to be measured.
Fine-Tune the Measurement: Adjust the legs until they just make contact with the surface of the object, ensuring that the pressure is consistent but not excessive.
Lock the Position: Once the desired span is achieved, lock the caliper in place using the locking nut or screw.
Read or Transfer the Measurement: The span between the legs can be transferred to a ruler or compared to a standard to determine the object's dimension.

Key Features

Spring Mechanism:
- Smooth Adjustment: The caliper features a strong spring mechanism that provides tension between the two legs. This spring allows for smooth and controlled adjustments when measuring.
- Consistent Pressure: The spring ensures consistent pressure when measuring the outside of a workpiece, helping to improve measurement accuracy.
Curved Legs:
- External Measurement: The two curved legs of the caliper are designed to measure the external dimensions of round objects, such as shafts, cylinders, and pipes. The legs are placed around the object, and the measurement is taken by adjusting the span.
Locking Nut or Screw:
- Position Lock: Once the desired span is achieved, the caliper has a locking nut or screw that allows the user to lock the legs in place. This ensures that the measurement remains consistent and can be transferred or repeated easily.
Durable Construction:
- Hardened Steel: Most outside spring calipers are made from hardened steel or other durable materials, making them resistant to wear and able to maintain precision over time.
- Corrosion Resistant: The material is often treated to resist corrosion, making the caliper suitable for use in workshop environments where it may be exposed to oil, grease, or moisture.
Various Sizes:
- Available in Different Ranges: Outside spring calipers come in various sizes, with different measuring ranges to accommodate small or large workpieces.
