Olive Leaf 60’s

The leave, bark and fruit of olive trees contain compounds which protect it from parasites and disease. These compounds are also some of the most powerful plant antioxidants known. Some olive trees are believed to have survived for thousands of years, demonstrating the power of these compounds to preserve and protect.

For many centuries, the fresh leaves of the olive tree have been used as a medicine because of their strong anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This is combined with strong anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-protozoan and anti-parasitic effects which have also been observed in animal and human trials.

How the body benefits

First line of immune defence – the gut

Human beings have around 10 trillion bacteria in our intestines. Some of these are essential for our wellbeing but if others overgrow, they can have a negative effect on our whole system. A poor diet, antibiotics, preservatives, certain medications or stress can destroy healthy bacteria in the gut and can cause an overgrowth of the (pathogenic) bacteria which are detrimental to our health. This can all lead to; a suppressed immune system, lowered resistance to bacteria and viruses, hormonal and digestive disturbances to name a few. Together with a good probiotic olive leaf extract can positively assist an infected or damaged gut.

Other immune boosters stimulate the immune system to destroy disease which still requires your own energy. Olive leaf inactivates pathogens in the gut (disease-causing organisms)without harming "good" gut bacteria. This is a major advantage as about 70% of your immunity resides in your gut with "good" bacteria playing a key role.

Situations where Olive Leaf extract can be beneficial in boosting the immune system; colds and 'flu, herpes infections of all types, lung and upper respiratory tract infections chicken pox, German measles, measles, mumps, gastric 'flu; HIV infections, Epstein Barr, warts, food borne illnesses (food poisoning), travellers’ diarrhoea, Lyme disease (transmitted by ticks), some forms of conjunctivitis (pinkeye), throat infections, urinary tract infections, sinusitis.

As an anti-fungal Olive Leaf may assist with fungal infections like Candida Albicans, mycotic nails, vaginal yeast infections, thrush and athlete's foot. Natural antifungal treatments are becoming increasingly important as yeasts and fungi become progressively more resistant to conventional antifungal drugs.

Most antifungal drugs onlyinhibitthe growth of fungi (fungistatic), which gives them opportunity to mutate and become drug-resistant. The cell structure of fungi is similar to human cells, hence difficult to destroy without damaging human cells as well. Fungi resist drugs in a similar way to cancer cells. Some can simply pump the drug out again. Others mutate, and become immune to the drug or proliferate like cancer cells to dilute the effect of the drug.

More information on Candida Albicans

Possibly the most problematic and widespread fungal infection afflicting the western world, the family of Candida yeasts has developed a high resistance to most antifungal drugs and is commonly contracted in hospitals while patients undergo other surgical procedures.

People with compromised immune systems such as those undergoing aggressive chemotherapy treatment, organ or bone marrow transplants and receiving immunosuppressant drugs or those with immune deficiencies such as AIDS are particularly vulnerable.

Synthetic antifungal drugs thus tend to have serious side-effects.

Antioxidant properties

Free radicals are formed in our bodies as the result of chemical reactions within. Both internal and external influences such as radiation and pollution result in these electrically unstable molecules which damage body cells. Antioxidants neutralize this destructive process. Olive Leaf can have as many as 20 polyphenolic antioxidants which, individually can each ‘deactivate’ specific groups of free radicals, and in synergy, form an incredibly powerful naturally-occurring free radical scavenger.

It may be used in the prevention of atherosclerosis and hardening of arteries. Doses consistent with those in traditional medicine to help maintain a healthy cardiovascular system, normal heart function and assisting maintenance of normal blood pressure can be used.

It has also been known to improves blood flow to the heart, correct arrhythmias, reduces angina, inhibits the oxidation of LDL cholesterol and reduce the ‘stickiness’ of blood platelet.

Anti-inflammatory - Arthritis

Olive leaf seems to work very well in reducing arthritic pain and swelling for some people. In these cases supplementation during severe bouts of arthritis, both rheumatoid and osteo-arthritis, is suggested. The anti-inflammatory properties of olive leaf extract can be very effective in these situations.

Relief from Gout

Olive leaves are a traditional gout remedy in the Mediterranean regions.
The enzyme Xanthine Oxidase, known to contribute to the development of gout is inhibited by a number of the components of olive leaves.

Olive leaf extract ingredients block a virus' life cycle, stop it multiplying then call up immune cells to demolish it. Viruses, once they start replicate rapidly and damage a large number of cells in a short space of time. Olive leaf extracts works quickly. You normally notice a dulling of symptoms within hours of the first few doses.

Natural antibacterial substances are not easy for bacteria to become resistant to and for simple bacteria to mutate around them. Olive leaves have traditionally been used to enhance the functioning of the immune system with both viral and bacterial infections as well as fevers. Oleuropein (widely regarded as one the most important constituents of olive leaves), hydroxyl-tyrosol and other compounds found in olive leaves have been shown to be effective. Two different physiological processes have been suggested; firstly, they appear to stimulate phagocytosis (the process in which immune system cells engulf and destroy invading organisms) and secondly by interfering with the ability of bacteria and viruses to replicate themselves and cause infection.

Often a bacterial sinus infection is complicated by other bacteria which are not killed by the medication used for the first one. This underlying infection brings on recurring attacks of sinusitis. The same bacteria can also be responsible for chronic bronchitis and the damage they cause can lead to infections by yet others causing pneumonia. The active ingredients (including oleuropein) of this natural antibacterial, breaks down the cell walls of a wide range of pathogenic bacteria and so destroys them.
